Dear Angela:
Janet and I have been friends for a long time. She’s a wonderful person, but I can’t say that about her daughter. Her daughter spits and hits others, and destroys people’s property if she is mad. I recently saw her daughter throwing rocks at my car! When I approached Janet about this, Janet was in complete denial. She defended her daughter and denied that her child would ever do anything like that. I had no witnesses to back up my story.I learned that Janet’s neighbors complained about her daughter’s behavior as well, but Janet insists her daughter is an angel. Why does Janet not confront her daughter? She’s no longer speaking with me and I’m afraid we’ll never be friends again. Will Janet and I speak again? Lisa 11/12/1977.Like to ask a question?

Dear Lisa:
Although your friendship with Janet was good in the past, do not look for the relationship to ever be the same. Janet is aware of her daughter’s behavior; however, she is not willing to confront the child for fear of losing the child’s devotion to her. Also, there seems to be a sense of entitlement that Janet feels her daughter should have. In other words, she is promoting bad behavior by not thwarting it because she believes her daughter should do whatever she pleases. Janet, too, values herself in the same way. Her daughter will continue her pattern of bad behavior and Janet will continue to reinforce it by pretending it never happens. As far as speaking with Janet again, you will. Do not expect the friendship to ever be what it used to be because the relationship now is no longer based on truth, but rather, what Janet pretends it is. -Millie, August 2011
